Unit 4: Analysis & Argument

In previous units, we primarily reported information, whether through summarizing/paraphrasing sources or presenting the results of a study. In this final writing-focused unit, we critically analyze various viewpoints and perspectives surrounding a topic or issue. Understanding an issue requires recognizing these different perspectives, ultimately allowing you to develop your own informed opinions and decide which perspectives you most agree with.

We will examine the differing perspectives that various stakeholders (e.g. scholars in different disciplines, public groups or organizations) have on the topic, ultimately choosing a particular perspective to agree with or recommend through a clear thesis statement that is supported by specific reasons and evidence.

We also discuss the importance of logical organization, including transitions, as well as qualifying claims and acknowledging counterarguments. Finally, we discuss how a writer can use the three rhetorical appeals—ethos, pathos, and logos—to engage readers in the analysis and argument.
